This site has been divided into "hubs" for easy navigating:. Each section dealing with a major aspect of interior and exterior house painting.
House paint
The two basic paint types are oil based (alkyd) paint and water based paints. Within the two basic paint types, there are special formulations for specific uses: enamels for doors and trim, clear coats for wood finishing, ceiling paints, wall paints etc…. Different resins are used to make a paint within the two main paint types: acrylic, vinyl or a mix of the two. Oil based paints can be made of a number of different oils, each having different application and durability qualities.
House paint application
The primary tools of the trade are the roller, brush and sprayer. While most applications in the house repaint scenario are with paint rollers and paint brushes - especially with homeowners, since there is more of a learning curve (and expense) with spraying paint.
The actual mechanics of painting a wall or painting a room are fairly simple: master the use of a paint roller and learn how to “cut in” with a paint brush, and you can paint a room. Add to this, the knowledge of paint preparation, primers and the correct choice of paint, and you have all the ingredients for a first-rate interior paint job.
Exteriors can be a bit more strenuous, requiring the knowledge and use of ladders, staging and working from roofs (sometimes steep roofs - and staying on them). With exterior painting, your work is not done privately - every neighbor can see the success (or failure) of your efforts, either in paint color choice, application competence, or the durability of your work.
House painting and decorating ideas
Painting is not just about function, it is also about decorating and creating a “look“. It is about finding what you like in terms of color and style and translating that to the interior or exterior through the use of house paint, color, and application techniques. There are many ways of adding paint in a decorative manner apart from just creative use of color: there are faux finishes, stencils, wallpaper, wood stains , stripes, graphics, and designs, textures and specialty paints.
Painting and Decorating: is a basic home maintenance undertaking that almost every homeowner will engage in at some point in their life. Not only homeowners, but apartment renters and home leasers, either by necessity or by choice, all become “painters” at some point in time.
