How to Repair Drywall

Almost all painting involves some surface preparation: spackling of holes and dents in the wall, cracks and even partial sheetrock replacement.

Tools
You will need a “set” of drywall knifes (1”.4” 6” at a minimum, also “broad” knives of larger size for large repair and seams), mud pan to work out of, measuring tools (tape measure and square), and cutting tools (razor knife, drywall saw, rasp).  For general pre-paint preparation a set of knives , razor knife, 5 in 1 painter’s tool and a mud pan will usually do.

Drywall Repair Compounds
Chemical Setting Compound
There are different drywall repair and finishing compounds.  First, there is the quick drying, chemical setting compounds.  These come in different setting  times from 5min to over 90 minute set.  Quick setting compounds  are used under slower drying all purpose or topping compounds to speed up the drywall repair process.  See Quick Setting Drywall Compounds

most applications.  Spackle is not recommended for large area skim coating.  Most pre-paint repairs can be done with spackle alone.

Drywall Repair Tape
Crack Repair
There are two main types of repair tape: fiberglass mesh and paper tape.  Drywall tape is used to add strength to seams or cracks in drywall to prevent cracking or re-cracking.   The fiberglass tape is self adhesive and can be applied directly to the drywall over cracks, whereas the paper tape requires a thin layer of drywall compound in which the tape is embedded into.  There is a newer version of paper tape which is perforated and is self adhesive.  The advantage of mesh tape is that it will not blister as paper tape can if it is not embedded well or there is an area without compound under the tape. Paper tape works better on inside corner repair where the mesh tape profile causes the drywall knife to bounce off its textured profile.  See Crack Repair

Hole Repair
Holes can be small requiring just some spackle, or medium sized requiring special drywall splicing techniques or surface patches, or large requiring replacement of whole sheets of drywall or close to it.
Standard Drywall Compound
Standard drywall compounds come in all purpose or topping compound versions.  Both of these sand easily.  The topping compound will shrink less as well.  Standard drywall compound usually requires overnight drying before you may sand, prime and paint.  These are the best choice for large repairs.

Spackle
Spackle, particularly the lightweight versions  don’t shrink and feather out very thinly requiring little sanding.  Spackle doesn’t sand as nicely as drywall compound but  will fill many dents and small holes in one application.  Spackle is quick drying, affording same day painting for
