The turbo nozzle is a good tool for removing loose paint.  Extend your reach with a telescoping extension pole, and wash without the need for an extension ladder.
There are different models of pressure washers: electric, gas, hot water and cold water models.  There are direct drive and belt drive models. Find the type that works best for your project.
Painted aluminum siding  will usually last a lot longer than paint will most wood surfaces IF you prepare the surface properly.  Cleaning is a BIG part of preparing aluminum siding for paint.  You can use a pressure washer or "hand" cleaning methods.
You don't have to spray aluminum siding to do a good job of painting it.  Often spraying is impossible  to do because of over-spray concerns.  Using a fine nap roller cover and painting with good painting technique will do a superb job of painting aluminum siding.
The most productive method of painting aluminum siding.  This method involves some masking and skill in operating and using an airless sprayer.  The results are terrific and fast.
Pressure washing, cleaning and stripping all have their place in preparing a deck for re-staining.
Toner stains are considered to be the easiest to refinish of all the deck stains. In most cases a simple pressure washing will prepare the surface for refinishing.  Toners are easy to apply with a low pressure airless or pump type sprayer.
Every exterior paint job will usually require some caulking.  Wide gaps will require the use of "backer rod", and perhaps smoothing out with a spatula.
Priming is an important part of exterior painting.  There are oil and latex primers used for raw wood, glossy sufaces, chalky paint, knots, and bleeding stains.  Some paints have limited self priming qualities.
Paint rough sawn or smooth wood trim using paint or solid stain.  When to use stain, and when to use paint.  When you should use a roller and when to use a brush for application.
An oil additive for exterior latex paint to enhance the ability of the paint to adhere to chalky, dusty and raw wood surfaces.
Attach your mechanical sander to a shroud and HEPA vacuum - and do it right. Find affordable HEPA vacuums and accessories that will get the job done.

To achieve this end, one must spend some time in preparing the surface for paint.  One thing you can be certain of, is that exterior substrates are not forgiving to poor surface prep. - the paint will peel if you don't do the preparation right.

Cleaning
The first step in exterior painting is cleaning.  There are salt deposits, chalky paint, mildew and airborne pollution to contend with.  The most efficient tool for pre-paint cleaning is the pressure washer.  A hard rinse with the pressure washer will remove most exterior contamination. Where you need to deal with greasy dirt or mildew, you will need a pre-paint cleaning solution to deal with these. There are two methods for delivering the cleaning solution to the surface: either with a pump type sprayer or with a chemical injector attached up stream on the pressure washer. On most exteriors there will be at least some mold/mildew to remove.  Bleach is the primary mildew cleaner used by most professionals.

The Wagner Paint Eater is another tool that will not only remove loose paint, but will degloss, feather and smooth out the edges too.  Shaving off the paint down to the bare wood is another option for more serious pre-paint preparation. The Paint Shaver and the Metabo Paint Remover tool will strip off paint and allow the debris to be suctioned off into a HEPA filtered vacuum.

Priming
Medium oil primers have been used for years on exteriors for priming because of their stain blocking and good adhesion combined with pretty good flexibility.  On the water based side, there are a number of latex primers that offer good adhesion to glossy paint and some penetration into bare wood.  A benefit of latex primers is their ability to allow moisture vapor to pass through them making them more resistant to peeling than oil.

Painting
Paints and stains can be used as a finish coat on exteriors.  Paint has a higher film build and strength with better hide.  Latex paint offers the best weathering , fade and chalk resistance.  Oil paints are used where there is a lot of old brittle paint already on the structure. Stains being thinner in viscosity, are easier to apply to rough sawn lumber.  There are exterior paints that are self-priming over bare wood substrates allowing you to skip priming with a separate product -except where a stain blocker is needed or where a bonding primer is needed for glossy substrates.

Exterior House Painting Overview*

If you do a good preparation and use good products, your exterior paint job can last for years.  If you cut corners and use discount paint, you may be out on the ladder in a couple of years doing it over again.

The universal rule for a substrate that is ready for paint application is: "CLEAN - DULL - DRY'. To this I would add that the substrate must also be 'SOUND" i.e. free of loose and peeling paint.

Loose Paint*
If the house doesn’t contain lead paint (built after 1978), loose and peeling paint can be removed using the pressure washer and a turbo nozzle.  Care must be given to avoid scarring the wood when blasting off loose paint with high pressure water.
*Note / Warning:Do not sand, scrape or disturb old painted (or varnished) surfaces.  Lead paint was banned in 1978. Any substrate or surface painted (or coated) prior to this may contain lead . Disturbing  these surfaces may release lead dust which is harmful and toxic and can cause serious illness including brain damage.  Do not use a pressure washer to remove lead paint, as you will contaminate the soil and scatter lead paint chips everywhere making clean up virtually impossible.      See Lead Paint Info page for more details.
