Interior Painting Ideas and Tips
- Paint usage: You will get about 400 square feet of "coverage" per gallon on smooth surfaces as a rule - per coat.
Surface Preparation
Painting
Usually, you will paint from the top - down. Ceilings get painted first. Flat paint or special ceiling paint is used in a white or off white. Walls are painted with flat or satin sheen paints as a rule. Washability is important with wall paints, as well as coverage. (See Sherwin Williams paint choices for interior painting).
Painting the Trim
The last thing that gets painted is the one thing that your paint work will be judged by: the enameling. If your enameling is smooth and even, you've done a good job. If the trim is less than perfect, your painted room will be judged the same. Take the time to do a good job on the doors and trim.
*Note: Don't sand pre-1978 paint to dull it as it may contain lead
.
Paint choice
You will need to decide what paint color, what type of paint to use (including sheen), and how much paint will be needed.
- Paint choice: In most cases latex paint will be the paint of choice. Generally speaking, flat paint is used on the ceiling and either flat or low luster (eggshell or stain) on the walls.
- Color: Deep tones are used for accent walls or rooms that you wish to make a statement. You are always safe with off whites and pastels.

Add just a touch and accent of pattern or print to a solid paint wall. Add border at the top of the wall, at the mid point to divide colors from top and bottom of the wall. You can frame windows and door openings. Cut out the pattern and add a motif header above a window or door way.
Show the detail and beauty of wood grain. Use the right stain color (see stain matching) to get just the right look. From mahogany to maple to walnut and anything in between. ( see Wood Staining page)
Stencils
Stencils can be hand applied or you can buy pre-made press on stencils to add vines, florals, prints and patterns.
Application
Roller and brush application is the norm for interior repainting.
"Cutting in" clean straight lines at the ceiling and wall joint requires a good brush and a steady hand.
