Gray is really just black mixed into a white base. Gray can be made with the colorants of lamp black or raw umber. mixed into a white base. Gray can vary from a silver gray, blue gray to a gun metal green gray and everything in between.
Tones, Shades and Tints of gray are made by adding white (or using less tint in a white base), or by strengthening the color by adding more tint. Adding black (lamp black or similar tint) will also give you a deeper shade of gray. See Analogous Colors
Gray is a neutral color and just about anything will go with it. Technically there really are no straight or split complements for gray as it is located at the center of the color wheel. The split complements shown above are red. red/blue, green and blue/green. See Choosing a Complementary Paint Colors
Gray on the exterior body of the house (siding) with white trim works well and is very conservative - (it won't upset the neighbors). You could do an accent color of almost any color for the front door and perhaps the shutters. On the interior, light grays are off- whites, used when you don't want stark white walls.

Black is added into a white base to achieve a gray color. Various shades and hues can be achieved by adding small amounts of other colors to the mix.
Lamp black will make a blue gray, raw umber will look more gold/brown - gray.
