Getting the right color sometimes is just a matter of  getting a good paint match.  You may want to match to a fabric, or another paint or an old paint color etc...  There are two ways of getting a paint match:  1) taking the item to the paint store and getting it matched or  2) "taking the paint store to the sample" to get a match.
Paint Color Matching
Matching to existing paint
Perhaps you've lost the can of left over paint or you moved into a new house and you don't have the paint from the previous paint job.  Now you want to touch up or paint another room with the same color.  How do you match the paint up.
Method 1:   If the switch plate covers are painted, bring one it to the paint store and have it custom matched.  You won't be able to touch up with this paint because you need the exact brand, line, sheen and batch to get an exact touch up match. You will be able to get a undetectable match this way if you are going to be painting a new room or from breaking point to breaking point in a room previously painted with this color.  If you have the old paint can (but don't have a legible label, bring the paint can in and have it matched.  Even if the paint is dried up, the store can match to any dribble on the can or even to the hard dried up paint in the bottom of the can.
Method 2:   If you don't have a painted switch plate cover, you will need to bring a color deck (or color strips of similar colors) to the paint itself and match up the best / closest match.  This will get you close, but not as precise as having a sample custom matched at the paint store.

Matching to a particular brand and color.
There may be a time that you desire to match to a particular brand and color that you are unable to get in your area.  Some brands are local and may not be in your area, or it may be that you want to match it in another brand because you prefer that other brand of paint.

Method 1: Go to the particular brand's store and get one of their color strips and bring it to your favorite store and get them to custom match to the paint swatch.
Method 2:  If the store is not in your local, bring the name of the paint color and brand to you paint store and see if they already have a color match on file at the store.  Many paint stores already have competitor's paint colors matched to their own paint and these formulas are on file in the computer data base at the store.

Matching to fabric etc..
Bring the sample to the paint store and have them custom match to the sample fabric or whatever sample you want matched.  If you can't bring the sample to the store, you will have to bring color swatches (from a color deck) to the sample and match up the closest one.
