Buff and Complementary Colors
Taupe is an orange/ yellow (gold) color deepened with black or gray.  Taupe can have a red cast or a gold cast, but it is deepened with gray or black, much more than "buff".  The colorants used to make taupe are the same as with buff: raw sienna, yellow oxide and raw umber.
Tones, Shades and Tints of Taupe are made by adding white (or using less tint in a white base), or by strengthening the color by adding more tint. Adding gray (raw umber or similar tint) will also give you a deeper shade of Taupe.  See Analogous Colors
The straight complement of taupe is blue.   The split complements are purple, red/purple and blue,  green/blue and green.  See Choosing a Complementary Paint Colors

Taupe is a nice historic color.  An earth-tone (with good hide in terms of paint coverage) that is warm (either a red or yellow cast taupe), and neutral.  Some taupes can get quite dark and gray.  Very dark taupes with a lot of black will have a colder appearance because of the blue / black (lamp black) used to deepen the taupe.
Located on the color wheel between yellow and orange, then deepened with gray. This tint blend is then added into a white base to achieve a taupe color.
