Reds and Clays

Reds have been a popular color for kitchens (with white cabinets),  or in a bedroom and when muddied up with gray  for a softer look for a living room.  You must be careful with red, if you “lighten” it up, you will create “pink”.   Burnt reds and rust colors are great for exteriors accents.  Compliments of red are clays and creams. White of course, works for trim and ceilings with red, as does cream and clay. Clean reds are difficult colors to achieve “coverage” or hide with.  You will find that a gray primer is necessary in you are going to get away with a two coat paint job.  Without a gray primer, you may be looking at three or four coats to get coverage.

Harmonious color schemes would include analogous colors of red, burnt red, or purple reds.  Shades of red involve adding black to the pure color of red making various hues of “rose”.  Tints of red (adding white to red) will give you pink, which will need to be mixed with black to “dirty it up” - resulting in a light rose color.
