Tape the whole seam with one continuous strip of mesh tape. Don’t overlap the tape as it will create a hump that will be harder to smooth and hide.
Flat taping works great with mesh tape. Because the tape is not embedded, it is not subject to blistering as paper tape is.
Mesh tape is stronger than paper tape and is more resistant to ripping and tearing.
Standard Paper Tape
Paper tape is smoother than mesh tape and has a thinner profile, making it easier to smooth over and hide. Paper tape is the best choice for inside corners as a rule, because mesh tape is prone to bumpiness when used in corners.
Paper tape must be embedded in a layer of drywall compound, it contains no adhesive and has no ability to stick to the drywall without being embedded in drywall mud.
Apply a 4" - 6” wide layer of mud to the seam or crack. Next, center the paper tape in the mud directly over the seam or crack. Smooth down the tape with a 6” spackle knife, pushing the tape into the mud. There must not be any dry spots where the tape is not making contact with or embedded into the mud, or the tape will form dry blisters.
Once the tape is embedded, you will immediately apply a thin layer of drywall compound over the tape, and smooth it down with your spackle knife.

There are two types of tape used in drywall taping and finishing.:
The procedure for using the two tapes are a little different. The procedure for flat tapping a joint or crack with each type of tape is outlined below and a video demonstration of each is included.
Fiberglass mesh tape
Mesh tape is self adhesive and strong, and blister proof. This tape is self adhesive and is applied directly to the drywall - no need to embed it into a layer of drywall compound.
Press the tape down and smooth it onto the seam or crack with a 6’ spackle knife. You can cut the tape with the knife by pulling the tape against the edge of the spackle knife.
