Woodgraining and Marbling
Book Reviews - pt1
I believe this one is out of print but if you search the used book stores you may be able to find a copy. You will find this book one of the most practical books on wood graining. The book is proponent of one step graining whenever possible. It covers primarily Walnut (brush) graining, and Oak (combed) graining. Two step graining is discussed for those projects where time and budget are not an issue. This is one of my favorite graining books. A must have but you will have to search a bit to find it.

Well written and a very popular book with faux finishers. A variety of woods are taught with step by step instructions. Tools, base coat colors and glaze colors are described. Straight grain, heart grain and quarter sawn grains are explored and different methods of rendering these grain types are described. You will learn how to use layers to obtain the desired graining result. With each sample the real wood is shown along side the wood grained rendering for comparison.
This book is an absolute must for any faux finisher. It will teach you the wood graining process and from there you should be able to copy almost any wood on your own once you understand this process.
Books and DVDs
Can you learn faux from a book ? The short answer is yes. Every faux finisher has a faux library. I have many decorative painting books and DVDs. Glean what you can from others and mix what you can into your own methods.
This book is dedicated solely to wood graining. The greatest value of this book is in picking up some new techniques, as well as sound advice on design and layout. This book first published in Great Britain will give you wood graining from a different perspective than the Professionally Painted Finishes book. England has been home to some of the very best wood grainers of the past such as the famous Thomas Kershaw, and anything gleaned from what has been passed down through the generations of English craftsman is worth taking note of.
I like to have a variety of methods of wood graining in my repertoire to be used when any situation warrants the use of a particular method. This book will add to any techniques you may learn from other sources or develop on your own.
