A quick method for eliminating hair line cracks in drywall is a rubber spray on coating called "Good - Bye Cracks" . Manufactured by the same people who make the famous Goof Off products, the elastic crack preventer is an innovative problem solver for a hard to fix problem.
Drywall stress cracks are sometimes impossible to eliminate because the movement in the house framing with seasonal changes
can put stress on the drywall which causes it to crack - often the crack runs from the corner of a window or door way opening.
Beautifully and invisibly repaired cracks will often return with the next round of seasonal changes and shifting of the house. Permanent repair of these types of stress cracks calls for bracing the framing behind the wall if long term results are to be achieved.
Some painters will replace the drywall where the crack has occurred
Since the drywall has been weakened with a crack that goes all the way through the drywall, repairing the surface of the drywall is considered by some to be a superficial method of addressing the problem. No matter how well you repair the surface of the drywall, you still have a crack underneath your repair which goes all the way through the drywall.
Settling crack repair (as opposed to annual seasonal movement)
It is this type of settling crack that a product such as the rubber crack preventer "Good Bye Cracks" seems to work best. Once the new house or new addition to an older house has had a chance to settle (most experts think this should occur within a year or two of construction) then a permanent repair can be made by first filling the crack void with spackle or drywall compound and after drying, a couple of coats of "Good Bye Cracks" applied prior to finish painting with a latex paint.
Elastic spackle
There are also elastic "spackles" that are trowel grade, made for application with a spackle knife. Instead of spraying over the crack, you will smooth this material with a spackle knife much the same way you would regular spackle.
So instead of taping and mudding the crack, the drywall is cut out over the problem cracked area and replaced with a new solid (un-cracked and un-weakened) piece of drywall.
This replacement method is a sensible repair method if the crack was the result of a one time "settling" of the house where the framing lumber has dried out or shifted and is no longer going to shift with seasonal temperature changes.
