Xim 400

I use this on the toughest to adhere to surfaces

XIM company makes some very good primers, this is another one of their fine products.  This is the best adhering primer of the three. Excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces, but with poor shelf life with settling problems.  Buy it fresh for each job and use it up and you should not have any settling problems. If I have a really tough to grip to surface, I use XIM 400, it has never let me down.  This primer is an interior / exterior primer.

Coverstain extensively as a bonding primer and stain blocker for years with excellent results.

Ventilation
I recommend all three of these primers to anyone. Each primer has it's strengths which should be considered before purchasing it for a particular job.  All of the above primers need to be used with good ventilation during and after priming.  Of the three, I think Cover-Stain is the least offensive in terms of odor - but they are all strong. See Ventilation and Eliminating Paint Odor.
Kilz Original

Probably the most popular alkyd primer

Very popular, stocked at most paint stores and hardware stores.  An interior only primer. Relatively inexpensive, but it has a strong odor.  Designed to be a substitute for shellac primers.  It is a good odor sealer, with good hide and pretty good adhesion. Masterchem, the manufacturer of Kilz, recommends the primer for glossy surfaces,  but recommends dulling the surface prior to applying Kilz for maximum adhesion.

Kilz Primer, Cover-Stain & XIM 400
Quick dry oil based primers
There are just some things that a waterbased primer doesn’t do well.  When the situation arises where you have bleeding nicotine stains or water stains, or you need to bind light paint chalk, an alkyd primer is the solution.  Alkyd stain blocking primers are better stain blockers than their latex counterparts.  Generically, oil primers will wet chalky or dusty surfaces better than a latex primer will too.  The three most popular of these primers are: Kilz primer, Cover-Stain, and XIM 400 white.
Cover-Stain

My favorite oil universal primer

This is the primer I use the most of the alkyd primers.  Cover-Stain does not have any settling problems. It has a bit milder odor (still strong), and it can be used indoors or outdoors.  Cover-Stain will adhere to glossy surfaces, and is a very good sealer. Zinsser, the manufacturer of Cover-Stain, is very prolific in putting out information about their primers, recommends Cover-Stain for glossy surfaces stating it “sticks to all surfaces  without   sanding"   I  have   used
