Ladder safety when using a ladder on an uneven surface has always been an issue.  While there are a lot of unsafe rigging methods used to level the ground under a ladder, I never use them. I have used ladder levelers on all my extension ladders for over 20 years. There are automatic levelers such as the Werner Level Master shown in the picture to the left, and there are levelers that you manually adjust.  I personally prefer the automatic type, which locks in place as you set the ladder down and put weight on the ladder.  I have the Werner Level Master on two extension ladders currently and I would not do

without them.  I have learned recently that Little Giant also has a leveler which I haven't had a chance to investigate but they usually make pretty good products, so that may be worth looking into.

This is another leveling device that I don't have a lot of experience with, I bought one this past summer for a job in a stairway that wouldn't work with my ladders. This product is called a "Pivit" Ladder Leveling Tool made by ProVision Tools.  While I prefer my Werner Level Master to this, the Pivit tool did it's job quite well and I will use it again. I have not explored all the various uses that the manufacture displays, but it seems to be a well built and versatile tool.  If you look at the picture on  the left, you will see it is doubling as a ladder jack. I have a set of Werner aluminum ladder jacks that I normally use but I will give the Pivot a try next time I need a ladder jack as such in a stairway and let your know how I liked them for that particular use. For those who don't want to modify their ladder with the automatic leveler the Pivit tool could be the next best thing.
