This finish can be done by applying a leaf (synthetic leaves - available at SW stores), or by “ghosting” a silhouette of an object (like a leaf) without actually leaving the leaf on the wall. I will describe the first method offered in the Sherwin Williams Artesian Impressions line of faux finishes.  Unlike the silhouette method, where the object is painted over, then removed leaving a void in the paint (or a negative image), the SW method actually leaves -the leaf, on the wall.

I must admit that many painters have mistakenly produced a leaf impression type of finish on an exterior paint job or two, when painting near a leaf dropping tree during a windy Fall afternoon.  But, this Leaf finish is intentional, and the leaves used, will not deteriorate.
Base Coat
The base coat is simply flat paint with this technique.  Two coats will ensure the surface is properly sealed and that there will be no suction spotting  where the paint absorbs unevenly.

Apply the first coat of flat paint and while the paint is still wet, you will place the leaves into the wet paint.  The paint will act as a “glue” to hold the leaves on the surface.  Work in 4’x 8’ sections.  Roll out a 4’ width of wall from top to bottom, then press the leaves into the wet paint, the roll out another 4’ section.

Leaves
You can buy the synthetic leaves at a Sherwin Williams store for this technique.  Place the leaves in the wet paint on the wall facing different directions and in an orderly - yet random pattern on the wall. You will need to embed the leaves with paint by rolling over the leaves after placing them on the wall.

Allow the base coat to dry, then re-coat with the same flat latex paint.  This will further embed the leaves, and provide for a properly sealed surface for the glaze coat to follow.

Color help
The easiest way to get a nice looking blend is to stay with two color tones in the same color family. Two shades of olive, one lighter, one darker etc…  You are also safe using a light or even bright base coat, then using a black glaze.  This is the color method used for faux leather finishes.

Use pre-made color card color selections
You can safe time and sample making, by simply using the convenient color cards that SW provides.  The color swatches have the base coat color and the glaze color on the card with a sample of the final finish.

Alternate wall sequencing
The best way to do this technique is to do two opposite walls first, then do the other two opposite walls. This will allow you to tape off the adjacent wall when working the technique on the wall.  See Alternate Wall Sequencing.

Glazing
After the base coat is dry, you will apply the glaze coat  The glaze will be a 50 / 50 mix of a flat latex paint and your latex glaze (Sherwin Williams Faux Impressions latex glaze or similar). The glaze is applied with a flat synthetic sponge in the same color wash manner that Textured Fresco glaze is applied.  Rub the glaze on, and soften and blend it with the sponge.  Use a circular rubbing action to apply and blend the glaze on the wall.
