Medium Oak Stain Color
Stain Matching
Start With: Minwax Early Amercian wood stain.
Add if needed: For more orange add Colonial Maple or raw sienna. For more brown add Dark Walnut If you need to darken the medium oak add Dark Walnut or Provencail, burnt umber, raw sienna and raw umber.
You can make a medium oak stain from scratch starting with a clear stain base then adding burnt umber, raw sienna and a little bit of raw umber universal colorants.
There are a number of hues of medium oak that you can tone to. You can re-stain to a different color altogether if you wish. You can stain darker and vary the tone with wiping stain. You can't go lighter by using a wiping stain over the top. You can tone with cedar or cherry or a number of Old Master's wiping stains. . You can darken the stain by using dark walnut over the top.
Woodgraining
The basecoat for matching walnut woodgraining will use a buff or an orange gold base coat. The graining glaze will be a gold brown. You can use mix of Old Master's Cedar, Provincial, and Special Walnut Wiping Stain to make your glaze. See Color Matching for Woodgraining.
Stain Palettes
Medium oak goes well with walnut and light gold stains as well as oranger maple type stains.
