One key to getting a nice finish is to do a good job sanding between coats and to do an especially good job just prior to your finish coat of varnish.

Sanding between coats
Use fine grit sandpaper (220 grit) and sand everything that you can get you sandpaper into.  I use sanding sponges (fine).  You need to be careful not to sand too aggressively particularly on rounded edges and on corners.  You  don't want to sand through the finish -  you want to smooth out the finish.

Follow up with steel wool
After sanding with 220 grit I like to follow up with 0000 steel wool.  Steel wool will follow contours better than sandpaper to smooth out contoured areas.  Steel wool is less likely to cut all the way through the finish on these delicate areas also.

Removing the sanding dust
First vacuum the surface to remove the heavy dust, then follow up with a tack rag.

Micro Fiber Tack Cloth
The Micro Fiber Tack Cloths are oiless tack rags that rely on the material and contruction of the rag to attract the dust particles allowing pick up. One nice feature of the Micro Fiber Tack Cloths is that they are washable and reuseable. I have about ten of these that I constantly use, wash and reuse.

How effective are the Micro Fiber Tack Cloths?  I think they work as well as any conventional tack cloth - but without the problem of transferring oil to the surface being dusted off.
