Common Sizes
4” and 6”

Common fabrics
  • Lambs wool
Just like it’s standard size counterpart, it is used with oil based paint. Lambs wool holds a lot of paint and is spatter resistant.
  • Foam
Great for rolling on enamels for trim and doors.  Leaves a very smooth, spray-like finish. Can be used with oil or latex enamels and clear coats.  Foam covers are completely non shedding and  lint free.
  • Mohair
Used for a smooth finish where the sponge does not work well. The added nap length (over the sponge) will mean less skips and holidays where there is some surface variance and unevenness.
  • Standard
This is the workhorse of the industry.  Because of it’s size, you would not roll out a whole room with this roller, but it works for special circumstances like spot priming etc… Used for interior painting and exterior painting out of a one gallon bucket.  This nap will work on rough sawn exterior lumber as well as smooth trim.  It can be used on drywall to get into cramped areas and for “cutting in” inside corners with a roller.

Wooster Jumbo Koter and Mini Koter line
Works the standard Sherlock Pole system or with standard pole in conjunction with the Sherlock adapter . Can be used  without an extension pole (as is the case most of the time).

The Jumbo Koter is a premium line of mini roller which has the Sherlock style roller frame. This frame will fit the Jumbo Koter covers only.  It does not work with generic mini roller covers (see the Mini Koter for a generic size frame). You can get many of Wooster’s roller fabrics in the mini Jumbo Koter size.

The Mini Koter is the standard size “wire” mini roller frame. The Mini Koter can be fitted with a variety of Wooster roller cover fabrics as well as foam.

Adjustable angel frame
The Jumbo Koter line has a specialty frame that can be changed from inverted 45 degree angle to straight to outward 45 degree angle. You can do the same with the Mini Koter generic type frame using a angle adapter for your extension pole.

Whizz brand
Whizz band was one of the first (if not the first) mini roller manufacturer.  They are still one of the most popular bands. Their roller frame is the generic wire type of mini roller. Whizz offers a unique faux finish line of specialty covers for their mini line. For conventional painting they have a variety of fabrics as well as a foam cover, they also offer a curved roller frame that uses a special cover for rolling out round spindles such as you will find on a railing.
Handles
  • Vary in length
  • Long will reach behind a toilet and other hard to reach areas
Can be fitted with an extension pole

Covered end and non covered
Most brands now come in the covered end (fabric wrapped around the end of the roller). The covered end allows the fabric to coat the opposite side of an inside corner, or the bottom side of horizontal lap siding.

Thin “pencil” rollers that have become popular for their ability to paint small areas quickly. The small size allow for rolling where a roller used to be off limits. Additionally the a mini roller will fit into a one gallon can (4”) and with a one gallon grid can be used to roll straight from a standard paint can

I can’t make a blanket statement that all mini roller covers and frames will work interchangeably with every manufacturer’s products, since I haven’t used every  brand out there in the marketplace. I will say that I have used one manufacturer’s frame with other’s roller cover on many occaisions and for the most part they seem to be interchangeable.
