Q: Which is better for spraying latex paint - HVLP or Airless?
Answer. If you are spraying a large area such as drywall ceilings or walls you want to use the airless. Airless sprayers are production tools apply the paint quickly and efficiently. If you are spraying latex or waterborne enamels then you could go with either. The airless will spray the latex enamel without thinning - straight from the can. Use a fine finish tip and you will get a great job. The HVLP is a fine finish sprayer but it does not spray thick materials very well, they usually require thinning. I use HVLP for shellac, oil enamel and lacquer. I also use it for waterbased primers which are a bit thinner and easer to spray than latex enamels. I use an airless for latex enamels.
Q: What size roller nap should I use?
Answer. For rolling drywall flats I use 3/4" nap. With sheen paints such as satins, eggshell and semi gloss, I use a short nap to minimize the high and low sheen fluctuations. A short nap roller would be 3/8" nap for drywall and a 1/4 nap or a dense sponge roller for enamel for a door etc.. You can then "lay off" the roller stipple with your brush for better smoothness when working with enamel.
Q How should I wet wallpaper border for hanging?
Answer. I unroll the border and apply straight water (or pre-paste activator) with a roller to the border. Rather than dip the spool in a water tray which is very messy, you will find this to be a clean and neat method of wetting your borders.
Fill a small 1 gallon pail with clean water, insert a 1 gallon roller grid and use a 4" mini roller to apply the water.
After wetting the spool, book it and allow it to "relax" (see instruction sheet for recommended booking times) and then hang.
