Advancements is latex paint technology  have led to the development of self priming exterior paint.

Self priming paints simplify the painting process by eliminating the need for a second product - a primer There is the hassle of having to clean up a whole second set of applicators used with the primer, as well as the disadvantage of having to wait for the primer to dry before proceeding with the actual painting.  Self priming paints are user friendly.
Particle size
In order for a paint to be self priming over bare wood, it needs to have the ability to penetrate into the wood.  To achieve this end, the particle size must be fine enough to get into the pores of the wood.  The self priming paints will have  a percentage of small resin particles - for penetration, as well as larger particles which are not able to penetrate and add to film build.

Most self priming paints are NOT self priming over:
Glossy surfaces
If the previous paint is glossy, you will need to either - degloss with a deglosser or sandpaper, or use a bonding primer prior to using your self priming paint.

Serious staining
Some of the self priming paints have some ability to lock in bleeding stains, but most, if not all, will not lock in serious stains from redwood or cedar or bleeding knots (see Sealing Wood Knots). In general oil primers are better stain blockers than latex stain blockers when it comes to sealing in stains and potential stains.

Ferrous metal
Ferrous metal requires the use of a metal primer, particularly if it is already rusting.  Metal primers use different methods to deal with rusting.  Some try to prevent oxygen and moisture from reaching the metal, others react with the metal to neutralize the rust.

Sherwin Williams self priming paints:
Duraion
A self priming, high build paint. Duration can be used at low temperatures (35 degrees -see label), extending the exterior season into the fall.     See Duration Exterior Paint
Self Priming Over:
  • Raw wood
  • Dull but clean previously painted surfaces
  • Some mild tannin staining

Weatherscapes
Weatherscapes, being a stain, is thinner in viscosity and is ideal for rough sawn  lumber and trim.  See Exterior House Stains.
Self Primiing Over:
  • Raw wood
  • Dull but clean previously painted surfaces
  • Some mild tannin staining

Other self priming paints:
Zinsser Perma White
This one is a real self priming paint.  It will stick to most glossy surfaces (see label), as well as penetrate into bare wood.  Made by the primer manufacture Zinsser.

Make your own self priming paint
Emulsa-Bond
You can make your own self priming paint with the use of  Emulsa-Bond  paint additive.  Emusla-Bond will make an ordinary exterior latex house paint - self priming over chalky and dusty surfaces, as well as over bare wood.  The Flood Co, the manufacturer of Emulsa-Bond,  takes advantage of it’s own penetrating oil (Penetrol), making it compatible with latex paint so that a standard paint can have the penetration of an oil paint.  In simple terms, the Emulsa-Bond oil separates from the latex paint upon application, and seeks to penetrate into the substrate it is applied to, leaving the non penetrating latex paint on the surface. See Emulsa-Bond for more detailed information.

Self  priming over what?
Primers are used for a lot of different reasons.  Some primers are for glossy surfaces, some primers are for binding chalky paint, some are for stain blocking etc..

The primers that address the broadest spectrum of priming needs are sometimes called “universal primers”.  While the self priming paints may penetrate into raw wood, they are not self priming over glossy paints for instance, and do require a separate primer in some cases.
