Square Off The Opening
Install the Clips
Mark the stud location
USG or Prest-on brand clips
  • Install the clips around the perimeter of the opening about every 6"
  • I like to glue and screw the clips in place. Using contruction adhesive, place a dab on one side of the clip (you will glue the other side later when you put the splice in place) and insert them in place, then screw the clip in with the screws provided (fine threaded sheetrock screws for metal attachment). Put the glue on the inside - side of the clip so that it will make contact with the backside of the drywall. Glueing and screwing the clips will attached the clips better than srewing alone.
  • You don't need to mark the location of the clips, the screws will mark the location of the clips once the splice is in and you can no longer see them.
  • Break off the flanges on the clips by bending them back and forth.

  • Square off the damaged area use a "L"square and a pencil. You want to measure back to solid, undamaged sheetrock and create a square opening.
  • Cut out the squared area. Use a utility knife (adjust the blade depth of the knife to the thickness of the drywall only - no longer,  This will prevent you from cutting blindly any wires etc.. behind the wall.
  • If the opening spans over a stud (as shown above), mark the location on the wall so that you know where it is after the drywall splice is in.

  • Cut a piece of new drywall to fit into the opening using the same thickness of drywall as the wall or ceiling on which the repair is being made.  See Cutting Drywall
  • Put a dab of construction adhesive on each clip and along the drywall stud.
  • Put one screw on the other side of the drywall repair through each clip.
  • Screw the drywall splice to the stud using coarse thread drywall screws

Tape and Finish the Drywall Splice
You are now ready to finish the drywall with tape and joint compound.  See Taping and Muding Drywall Repairs
Install the Drywall Splice
Holes in sheetrock or drywall can be quickly repaired using drywall clips.  The clips allow you to splice in a piece of drywall anywhere on the wall or ceiling, without having to cut the drywall back to the studs.  Better than surface patches (metal patches), the clips allow you to maintain the fire rating of the drywall construction.** (See note bottom of page.)
