The Textured Fresco faux finish is a subtle, mottled finish on top of a finely textured base coat.  The resulting finish has an old world style that is timeless. Textured Fresco is a good finish for a bedroom, living room or dinning room. The technique is done in three parts
  • 1. Textured Base Coat
  • 2. Paint
  • 3 Color Washed Glaze Coat

Priming
You don’t need to prime if the previous paint on the wall is a flat finish  If you have a sheen paint, prime with a bonding primer like XIM’x UMA primer, prior to base coating..
Troweled Basecoat
This is the classic skip trowel knock down texture. You can do this with different materials.  I will describe how to do this with the standard materials that Sherwin Williams offers in the Old World Impressions series.  This basecoat goes on the wall - un-tinted (white).

Work in 4’ X 4’ areas at a time.

1A.  Roll on.  Start out by applying the Dimensional Basecoat  to the wall with a dampened sponge roller, in a random way using circular arcs and wavy “S” patterns.  Don’t try to achieve full coverage with this base coat . It should have skips and open areas where the prime coat shows through.  The sponge roller helps in leaving open voids in the application of the basecoat.

1B. Smooth down.  Using very light pressure, and with the trowel or spackle knife almost flat to the wall, begin to smooth down the light texture.  Smooth the texture out in circular or short wavy “S’ patterns with the spackle knife.  Don’t try to smooth the whole surface. The surface should have small pock marks and creators and light texture with smooth areas, resembling the appearance of “stucco”. Once you have completed the smoothing, go on to the next 4’ X 4’ section and repeat 1A and  1B until you have finished the whole wall.

2. Paint
After the basecoat is dry, you will paint the wall with a flat latex (like Duration Matte). Paint the walls in the usual roll and brush method that you would do when painting a room with standard paint.  The only exception is you should roll all the way into corners and roll horizontally as close as possible at the ceiling to avoid picture framing the wall with a brush.  Use a covered end type of roller cover and mask the ceiling and adjacent walls with easy release (3M #2080) painter’s tape. Apply tow coats of paint, this will ensure that the surface is uniformly sealed.

3.  Glazing
The glaze is applied in the classic color wash method.  Your glaze  mixture will be 50% flat latex paint (Duration Matte) and 50% latex glaze.   You will apply the glaze to the wall with a damp flat (synthetic) sponge.  Add the paint to the sponge by rolling it on to the sponge with a short nap, mini roller.  Using a circular, rubbing motion, wipe the glaze on and work it into the crevasses working quickly and efficiently.   Work across the wall wiping on and blending with the sponge.  Your overall appearance should be a randomly mottled look, with the paint/glaze collecting in the creators and crevasses.

Alternate wall sequencing
The best way to do this technique is to do two opposite walls first, then do the other two opposite walls. This will allow you to tape off the adjacent wall when working the technique on the wall.  See Alternate Wall Sequencing.

Don’t apply this basecoat too heavily, it should be a light texture only. This will make smoothing and “knock down” easier to do.  You want only small “creators” and smooth toweled areas.  Keeping the texture light will go a long way to achieving this end result.

Do a 4’ X 4’ section , then smooth the texture down with a trowel or spackle knife (with rounded corners to prevent scratching or grooving with the edge of the knife.
Smooth Fresco Finish

This finish is done the same way as the Textured Fresco finish except you skip the first step application of  the textured basecoat.

With the Smooth Fresco finish you paint the wall with a flat latex, allow it to dry, then rub on the paint/glaze with a damp, smooth sponge in the same color wash manner.
