Walnut Wood Stain Color
Stain Matching
Start With: Minwax Dark Walnut or Special Walnut wood stain.
Add if needed: For more orange add Colonial Maple or raw sienna. For more red add Red Mahogany or burnt sienna. If you need to darken the walnut add Ebony or lamp black or raw umber. Darkening with Ebony, lamp black or raw umber will take some of the warmth out of the stain color (it will neutralize the orange or red), so you may need to add more Colonial Maple or Red Mahogany to warm it back up.
You can make a walnut stain from scratch starting with a clear stain base then adding burnt umber, raw umber and raw sienna universal colorants.

You can make a deep cherry stain color by going over walnut with Cherry. You can darken the stain by using dark walnut over the top. You cannot convert walnut to a light stain color by re-staining, you can only tone it or darken it.
Woodgraining
The basecoat for matching walnut woodgraining will use a gold to an orange gold base coat. The graining glaze will be a deep gold/red brown. You can use Old Master's Dark Walnut Wiping Stain for your glaze. See Color Matching for Woodgraining. See also Walnut Woodgraining
Stain Palettes
Walnut goes with dark cherry or mahogany stains for a subtle tone on tone or two tone stain mix. Combining with a warm medium oak produces a great two tone stain mix.
Walnut Stain and Paint Palettes
Dark walnut (almost black) works with darker historic or Victorian colors. Walnut works with tans, beiges, buffs, gray greens, mauves, rose, and ivory tones. Because it is a deep stain color it will make a white or off white look pretty "stark" up against it.
