The airless sprayer is an important tool to most paint contractors who do new construction painting.  Used for both interior and exterior new construction painting, the airless paint rig saves lots of time (and work), speeding up production and keeping painters on schedule in the fast paced world of new house painting.  Airless spraying is by far the fastest way to apply paint, the next best method in terms of speed of application would be the pressure roller - often powered by the airless sprayer, is advisable only where spraying would not be justified because of overspray concerns or masking time rules out spraying.

Interior Spraying
The lions' share of paint in a new construction job goes on the drywall ceiling and walls. When you consider the priming and the painting of the drywall, it is not unusual to put 50 - 75 gallons of paint on the ceiling and walls of a new house.  Trim and door  primer and paint for the same house may only be 8 - 10 gallons.  The more paint there is (of the same color) to be applied - the more you should consider using an airless to apply it.

Covering up
The view of the "non-painter" and causal observer of spraying a new construction interior is kind of like " just close the windows and let it fly" -  there is no carpet, tile or vinyl on the floor.......   but really there are  quite a few things to cover up prior to spraying.  In my area, it is customary for the house to be primed before cabinets and trim go up ( as well as before flooring etc.. goes down), this would come the closest to the "let it fly" scenario.  Even then, I always cover all the electrical outlet openings, any open piping, as well as the obvious things such as windows and bath tubs etc...

Clean Floor
Anyone who has used an airless in a new house is familiar with the air turbulence created by the airless sprayer.  If the floor is not dust free,  you are going to kick up dust off the floor onto the wet paint on the wall.  If your builder doesn't take care of the clean up, then you will  have to get the shop vac out an do it yourself.  Can you get away with vacuuming a swath of four or five feet at the base of the walls?  Maybe, it depends on your pressure setting.  Maybe, if you keep it low and be careful, but one wrong move and the wall and base board are going to be covered with saw dust and dirt.

Spraying
The actual spray technique is really pretty basic.  First you should know that new construction drywall is sprayed and back rolled, for two reasons:  1) on the prime coat you will push the rough drywall paper down where the sanding process roughed it up by back rolling. If you don't backroll you will have rough  raised paper nap all over the ceiling and walls which will require aggressive pole sanding to remove. 2) your touch ups later on down the road will blend better if you back roll your finish coat.

Vertical spraying works best for walls, spray from top of the wall to the floor, follow that up while the paint is still wet with back rolling.  The spray tip for drywall painting  (latex paint) should be in the .517 - .521 range.  The roller nap length for a flat paint finish should be in 1/2" - 3/4" range.

Other Points
Don't run the furnace while you spray to avoid pulling spray dust into the ventilation ducts.

Personal Protection and Cover up
Use a paint respirator at all times. Do not use a dust mask as a cheap substitute. There are paint vapors as well as very fine particles floating in the air with airless spraying  - even with latex paint so use the proper lung protection.

A common new construction spray "suit" consists of: a Tyvek coverall, spray sock, and especially for those who wear contact lenses - goggles.  Airless spray floating in the air and dropping down on you when spraying ceilings will quickly get onto your contact lenses and ruin them. Some painters even wear work gloves leaving only their shoes left uncovered. I always wear black work boots, this way I can polish over my oversprayed boots when they collect enough overspray on them. A little black shoe polish and voila - new boots.

New construction spraying of the drywall primer.  The video does not show back rolling behind the spraying which is necessary to prevent rough drywall nap caused by the pole sanding of the drywall compound. I also would cover up the electrical outlets to prevent spray from entering the electrical boxes and wiring.
