Suede Paint: Questions and Answers
Q.  Can I touch up Suede Paint?

A.  Suede paint is hard to touch up invisibly.  You should try to touch up from breaking point to breaking point if you can.

Q.  Can you paint over Suede Paint?

a.  Suede paint is really just a flat paint.  You can paint directly over Suede paint without priming.  Although there is a bit of a sand texture to Suede paint this really doesn't show once recoated.

Q. Do I have to use a special paint to do the suede technique?

A.  Yes.  If you just cross hatch and apply a standard latex paint in semi arcs you will not get the suede effect at all.  The way that the suede paint reflects light by showing directional patterns is what makes this paint work.  Actually a good latex paint shouldn't show directional pattern if you cross hatch the paint on the wall,  the uniformity of a standard latex and not being able to pick up directional pattern is what makes a standard latex paint a good paint.

Q.  Does Suede Paint clean up well?

A.  Suede paint is a flat sheen paint that  has a fine sand-like texture to it and consequently it will get dirty just like any other flat paint.  Although the paint may clean up, it will be like a flat paint in that you will need to be careful not to burnish the paint by rubbing it.  Also a flat paint tends to get dirty easier than a sheen paint.  For these reasons Suede paint works best in dinning rooms or living rooms and I would not use it in high traffic areas that would cause it to get dirty.

Q.  Explain how to use a flat paint as a base coat - again.

A.  Instead of using the suede paint as your first coat (or base coat), use a standard flat paint.

Color selection
Match a flat paint color chip up to the color you have selected for you suede paint. Find the closest match and tint your flat paint with a 75% formula (don't stumble on the 75% formula part, you can do the exact 100% formula if you'd like.  The suede paint will have a little more contrast if you are slightly lighter on your base coat)

Apply this paint in the usual way with a roller and brush.  Once the room is painted, allow to dry as per manufacture's label.  You then can proceed with the suede paint and suede technique.
